This Christmas, standing alongside Peter, with Ellen actually smiling (albeit faintly) beside us, I felt something shift. It wasn’t perfect, and I didn’t expect miracles, but it was progress.
Sometimes, family isn’t just the people you’re born into or marry into—it’s the relationships you work to build, repair, and grow. Ellen and I might never be best friends, but at least we were finally on the same page: family means everyone.
And that was the best Christmas gift I could’ve asked for.
